Please can you tell me the benefit of a cold node

I understand that the multichain cold node is for offline purpose in a blockchain but how does it contribute to the blockchain in any way if its offline by not participating in consensus or mining etc. What is its benefit?

Are multichaind-cold API commands in line with multichaind?

Question (mostly) states it: are the available cold APIs the same as the regular multichaind commands, or can they (potentially) change to fit either the hot or cold node better?

If they are the same I'll simply point my wrapper to the list of hot node commands (instead of copy pasting the code) and pick the ones that I need for the cold wallet

What's the prescribed way for communication between multichaind and multichaind-cold?

I tried passing base58 encoded key, and also a WIF string generated by this page: https://gobittest.appspot.com/PrivateKey

It doesn't work and I'm now stuck.
